What is ExtraProof?
ExtraProof is software from Extraara for documenting the process behind written work. During a session, it records observed activity and links the record to a specific file version. Teachers and students can use that record when discussing how a piece of work developed.
What happened to HumanProof?
HumanProof is the former name of ExtraProof. Extraara continues to develop the application under the ExtraProof name. Earlier posts and records may still use the old name.
What do I need to get started?
Writer is not available as a public download. Contact us about a pilot. Received records can be checked for free with Verify.
Does the recipient need an account or a licence?
Public browser verification is free and requires no ExtraProof account. The recipient needs the PDF evidence document or JSON record and, for a file comparison, the bound original file. Verification needs a current browser with JavaScript, Ed25519 support and HTTPS.
What is the difference between PDF and JSON?
Writer exports a signed, readable PDF evidence document containing a Creation Record. JSON is the technical alternative for the same type of evidence. The browser extracts and cryptographically verifies the embedded record in a ExtraProof PDF. The visible PDF content and PDF/CMS signature are outside this browser check; the native app handles PDF signature verification separately.
May I use AI, translation or other assistance?
The rules of your assignment, editorial team or organisation determine that. ExtraProof does not grant permission or calculate an AI score. Agree on permitted assistance before the session and provide any required disclosures separately. A valid signature does not establish whether a tool was permitted.
What does pasting text mean?
Pasted text may be a quotation, your own earlier draft or outside assistance. An activity signal alone cannot decide which. ExtraProof does not store clipboard contents as telemetry. Cite sources and disclose assistance under the applicable rules; a paste event is not, by itself, a judgement about your work.
Can I create evidence for an already finished text?
ExtraProof documents observations during a session you have started. It cannot reconstruct how a text was created before that point. An existing file can be bound to a record; this establishes the association, not that the session produced the file.
Does ExtraProof work without an internet connection?
Writer processes sessions locally. Cryptographic verification also runs locally once the required verification environment is available. Prepare and test an offline workflow in advance; saving information pages for offline reading does not, by itself, ensure the full verifier is available. Examples and website files needed for the first time must be loaded beforehand. Verification does not make live requests for revocation or current trust information.
Can I verify a record without the manuscript?
Yes. The signature and event chain can be checked without the manuscript. Comparing a file binding requires the recipient to have the exact bound file. A record without a file binding remains evidence about a session; it does not confirm a particular text version.
Why does the file stop matching after a revision?
The comparison concerns exact bytes. A new export or changed document metadata can produce a different file even when the visible text looks identical. Keep the bound submission version and identify later versions separately. If a comparison fails, first request the correct original version.
Why is the key not independently confirmed?
A record includes its own public key. That enables the signature calculation but does not yet establish a person or institution. Obtain an independently known fingerprint through an already verified contact or an agreed key directory. Copying it from the same record adds no independent basis for trust.
What should I do about interruptions or a failed check?
Check the file type, size limit and browser support. For format or signature errors, request the unchanged export; do not edit the record by hand. Discuss capture gaps and interruptions with the writer under the agreed rules. For technical help, start with the error message, version and steps taken; do not send confidential manuscripts or private keys.
Is the verification result itself a certificate?
No. A locally saved text or JSON verification report records a check and is unsigned. The signed evidence comes from Writer. Neither a successful check nor a PDF automatically proves human authorship, absence of AI assistance or a qualified electronic signature. Decisions depend on the individual findings and agreed context.
